This is another decent album for lovers of doom and grunge as well. It doesn’t tread new ground but rather sticks to a trusted method.

Overall, an album chock full of intensity and competent drumming. It feels a bit repetitive in spots and left me wanting to see them expand upon their slow, melodic chops.

Freya is made up of three ex-members of the straight-edge band, Earth Crisis. This is their first release since 2007’s “Lift The Curse”. To avoid making stereotypical name-dropping, I’m just going to say that this sounds very little like Earth Crisis and that it automatically reminds me of modern Hatebreed due to the crossover appeal.

Maybe it was just coincidence that Unique Leader released two similarly-named bands at the same time (Arkaik and Devolved), or perhaps it was like this album’s name: calculated. Devolved certainly lives up to their title in various definitions.

When searching for adjectives to describe this band, ‘archaic’ certainly does not come to mind. The furthest this band reaches is to previous-generation heavyweights like Suffocation, but their execution and ethos seem similar to West Coast neighbors, The Faceless. Both bands even commissioned Par Oloffson for their artwork!
