Beatallica is causing quite a stir these days. The mash-up band–who blends elements of The Beatles and Metallica into something fresh, inventive, and damn amusing–has released their latest work Masterful Mystery Tour, their second long player. There is so much to love about this group, whose success is due to the dedication of fans, tenacious workmanship, and digital distribution Well, Metallica‘s good graces (and lawyers) helped, too. Good interview. Here’s a little story about the whole .org vs .com thing:
The mp3′s were originally posted on my own personal website. By the time I finally got around to reserving “beatallica.com” (summer 2003) I discovered I had been beaten to the punch by a fan, Trevor, who grabbed the name to keep it from falling into the wrong hands. I got in touch with him, and he graciously forwarded visitors to beatallica.org, which we owned.
When the cease-and-desist notice came down in Feb. 2005, beatallica.org was subject to a DMCA takedown for a while, because we controlled it, but beatallica.com was not! So while all the shit was happening, we were still able to keep in touch with our fanbase (and the press) through beatallica.com.
See kids, sometimes cybersquatting is a good thing!
