Throughout their thirteen year existence, The Dillinger Escape Plan has challenged heavy music audiences with their archetypal avant-garde execution. On their fourth full-length, the New Jersey quintet continues their divisive evolution, which now finds the band giant steps beyond their origins. While many detractors have abandoned modern DEP in favor of their 90s output, I feel more compelled to follow them than ever before.
If you’re looking to escape the stresses of life, this is a good place to start. The harmonies are always consonant, the guitars always sound pleasing, and the songwriting is fluid and consistent. The only thing that really bumps this down from a 4.5 to a 4 for me is the lack of creativity. They don’t go out of their way to make their own unique sound. When you get down it, though, that really doesn’t matter.

Lair of the Minotaur have always been a band I’ve been fond of. In fact, they’re one of my favorites on the Southern Lord roster. Well, they were. Steve Rathbone (guitar, vocals) and Chris Wozniak (drums), in conjunction with Josh Diebel (Alleysweeper Records), chose to take matters into their own hands and start their own label, now known as The Grind-House. Though distribution is still handled by Southern Lord, they’re pretty much an independent band now. This is likely what accounts for the slight change of sound on the new album.
Barely a year off the ground, and they’ve got so many sweet gigs! Read on for more info on their upcoming tour with Amon Amarth, plus they have confirmed a slot at the 2010 Download Festival.

As a unit, they radiate an aura of authenticity, if for no other reason than their steadfast adherence to traditional folk instruments (albeit amidst Gothenburg thrash). Nothing is synthesized, from the violin and hurdy-gurdy to a wide variety of flutes, pipes, and whistles; the band crafts songs with both depth and dynamism. Where so many similar bands feel forced, Eluveitie channels a naturally flowing energy into their powerful music.
