Review : THINNING THE HERD - "Oceans Rise"

Rating: 4.5/5

I often daydream out of boredom at work and this cover art brings back memories of one of the oddest dreams I’ve ever had. A salty rock start evoked distant strains of Alice in Chains as “Oceans Rise” roared towards me.

VOIVOD's Michel "Away" Langevin Interviewed by Willie Strausser LIVE on 'Mind over Metal'

Hear why Michel loves “War and Pain” and he even sets Wikipedia straight on some facts. Willie also inquires about the Montréal metal scene, thoughts on Pink Floyd, fond memories of Iron Maiden, the ‘family’ feel of Voivod and their near three-decade evolution, with insight into the future of this incomparable band. And for the first time, Away gets asked to pick a favorite song to close out the talk!

Review : CORMORANT - "Dwellings"

Rating: 5/5

Black is the new black. The darkness seeps and seethes through modern metal, and I welcome it. Intrigued by bands adept at genre-bending, they must be sought. In my experience, bands named after birds are largely instrumental—like Pelican or Red Sparowes—but Cormorant is latest on my list, and barely sound like either of those. They originally struck me as similar to Seattle’s Lesbian, but truly live in their own atmosphere.

Manson, Dali, Shakespeare, Pixies

I have not paid close attention to Marilyn Manson for years. Now he’s enlisted Sam Witwicky to direct a video. And I like it.

Jon Necromancer Spits BONES Live on 'Mind over Metal'

This music is lethal, infectious as myeloma, and already has a reserved slot on my Best of 2011 list. If your knowledge was spotty like mine, listen to their origins with previous band Usurper, and details on their recording style with producer Sanford Parker. Hear complete sneak previews of “March of the Dead” from their eponymous debut (which continues behind our conversation) and “Lonely Death” to conclude.

WITTR's Aaron Weaver LIVE Interview with Willie Strausser on 'Mind over Metal'

Wolves in the Throne Room are first-rate third-wave black metal. Just as Scandinavia was itself intrinsic to the genre’s original sounds, the Pacific Northwest U.S. gives spirit to these American luminaries.

Review : AUGUST BURNS RED - "Leveler"

Rating: 3.5/5

“Leveler” is a great album for fans of the genre, and August Burns Red are clearly trying to branch out with their melodic sound, but I want to hear them better embrace the metallic side.

Review : PESTE NOIRE – L'Ordure à l'État Pur

Rating: 2.5/5

No band exemplifies the desire to tinker around with black metal more than Avignon’s Peste Noire. But on their latest effort, “L’Ordure à l’État Pur”, the egotism has reached heights beyond what may be considered an enjoyable climb.

Review : YOB - "Atma"

Rating: 4.5/5

Over the course of the last decade, no band has constructed a sound as meticulously unique as the mighty YOB. They have landed in the strange middle ground between Burning Witch and Electric Wizard, all while sounding absolutely nothing like either of those bands.

MORBID ANGEL's "Illud Divinum Insanus" from an Industrial POV

Rating: 2/5

This album is, well, shit. There is scarcely anything worth listening to, and may as well have never been released.
