AcrassicaudaOnly The Dead See The End Of War
released March 9, 2010 on Vice Records

Many of you may know of Acrassicauda, even if their name is challenging. They are the subject of the acclaimed 2007 documentary Heavy Metal In Baghdad, and the first Iraqi metal band to gain a worldwide audience.

They were wise to release a taut EP, rather than try to force a full album with intros, intrerludes, covers, unfinished songs, etc. As the title suggests, much of their music addresses the Iraq war(s) in various contexts. It never takes an accusatory tone, but realistically addresses difficult emotions and situations. The vocals sound mostly like Testament‘s Chuck Billy in his lower register, which may be one reason Alex Skolnick took notice of Acrassicauda and produced this release.

“Garden Of Stones” is certainly the most fully-realized track, with strong hooks in the chorus, folk elements, and the best solo on the EP. “Massacre” has interesting moments, but feels cobbled together – it is best placed here though, because “The Unkown” improves, so we end on a higher note.

Acrassicauda has made a powerful statement on their debut, but they must progress. Primarily singing in English was the right move; chants and wails were well implemented in their native tongue, and I would like to hear more. Along those same lines, incorporating traditional melodies and instruments amidst their thrash attack will help distinguish the band on the metal landscape. Their journey is just beginning – I expect exciting things!
