Cannibal Corpse – “Evisceration Plague”
Released February 3, 2009 on Metal Blade
Cannibal Corpse is arguably the most controversial American metal band. It appears as though this is diminishing, though. You won’t find “Fucked With a Knife” (although track 8 references crotch-stabbing) or “I Cum Blood” on this album. Just standard gore lyrics which contrast with their earlier material. Musically, however, it’s still basically the same band. It’s fun, simple, straightforward death metal. Depending on your taste, this could be good or bad. I’m not a huge fan of it, though I don’t want to see them mimicking modern bands like Job For a Cowboy, Decrepit Birth, or Abysmal Dawn, as they have a niche and are one of the best bands around today in their genre. Though I prefer the Chris Barnes era, George Fisher is still a formidable replacement. The title track (8) is a great mid-paced, catchy breath of fresh air and definitely does its job serving as the climax of the album. The beginning is nailed, with the first two tracks charging out of the gates. There isn’t much closure to the album, however, and the lack of real meat in the center is disappointing. Subtle grind (2) and prog (11) references can be heard.
