Del Rey - Immemorial

Del Rey is a post-rock band out of Chicago,IL. They are inspired by the art-rock, punk and psychedelic/space rock genres. This is their first full-length release since 2006’s A Pyramid for The Living. “Return Of The Son Of Fog Rider” starts off this album with slow, spacey guitars backed up by tinny drums. Each beat and pluck of the strings contributes to a soundscape that plods along at a snail’s pace. At seven minutes in, the ingenious dual drums pick up, emulating the hoofbeats of a magnificent horse.
And speaking of horses, “E Pluribus Unicorn” starts off on a quiet note, slowly picking up in speed as the instruments increase in tempo and then crescendo into primal drumming. Dark and epic, this track is a challenge to my ears. The brief “Innumeracy” leads perfectly into “Silent Weapons for Quiet Wars”. Similar in scope to the first track but with a time signature that is better defined with just a touch of sludge and primal vocals, it is rich and surreal in nature. “Ouisch” is another short track that leads into “These Children That Come At You With Knives”. There’s not much to differentiate it from others, but it is a nice way to finish off such an excellent album, unless you count “Ancestral” as a gentle closing finish.
Del Rey takes of the best parts of progressive, sludge, doom & post-rock and lays them out for the listener to decipher—Immemorial is certainly one of the most interesting albums I’ve heard all year long!
