Dopethrone - Dark Foil
Release: 2011May13 (US)
Label: Self-released
Rating: 4/5
I was listening to older Bongzilla the other day, and I realized that there are few similar bands who rival their musical output. This is why I want to worship Dopethrone, a Canadian stoner/doom group that takes its name from the Electric Wizard album of the same name. There is definitely a strong sensimillarity to bands like Orange Goblin and Bongzilla, mainly due to their plodding pace and references to cannabis sativa.
The title track of their self-released sophomore set, Dark Foil, is a bastard brew of thick, chewy sludge with plenty of doom to spare. In fact, there’s even a slight resemblance to Alice In Chains in terms of musicianship. And “Tap Runner” reinforces a sinister vibe that should easily stir fits of apathy. Unfortunately, all I feel is apathy towards the “Porcelain God”, which doesn’t have much to differentiate it from the first track.
I spent most of this album trying to digest the first four tracks before I consumed a tablet of “Zombi Powder“. It’s the equivalent of spending fourteen excruciating minutes trying to pass a stinky brick, which left me feeling as if I had shat out my humanity. With that out of the way, I developed an urge to walk around in search of tasty flesh and cranial matter—a sort of “blood harvest” or something—not sure why. Then I felt like buying a clown suit and ukelele—again, not sure why. While you probably won’t develop similar urges, I still recommend a main course consisting of Dopethrone with a side of roughage.
