Fairyland – Score To A New Beginning
released March 25th 2009 on Napalm Records
“Fantasy” metal. This album would be better suited for “Dragons on Ice,” or something involving mythical woodland creatures, than for headbanging metalheads. Though I still salute the band; after a near fatal breakup, Fairyland comes back miraculously reformed with a successful album.
If you can get past all their flower power, there is an epic “wall of sound” atmosphere, that can be somewhat moving. The progressive vocals (both male and female) are respectable and synch up together nicely. “A Soldier’s Letter” impressed me with a beautiful tune of pianos, acoustics, and electric solos. “Rise Of The Giants” is an adventurous instrumental with no metal influence whatsoever. There was also a spark of celtic influence throughout the album that was a perk. Overall, very Rhapsody/Symphony X/Ayreon-esque (but less original). Maybe if you make an ensemble of movie clips going along with the album, it would work as a perfect soundtrack. Harry Potter, anyone?
