Fenriz’ Red Planet | Nattefrost – Engangsgrill
released November 10, 2009 on Indie Recordings

Some music is meant exclusively for diehards and completists. Such is the case with this split (not collaboration) between Fenriz (Darkthrone) and Nattefrost (Carpathian Forest). It is comprised of the former’s 1993 project, which is reminiscent of first-wave doom like Pentagram and Black Sabbath, and smatterings of the latter’s output from much of the 2000s, which falls more in line with T.N.B.M. Both are interesting; neither are essential.

Fenriz packs in some head-nodders for his first half, recorded in Necrohell Studios entirely by the man himself. And I mean everything, from conception to execution! It’s the bluesy grooves you’ve come to know and love from scores of stoner bands, and it’s surprising to hear Fenriz tackle this sort of material. His high vocals really caught me off guard, but have a raw charm.

Nattefrost’s half is nearly all him, but he brings in some guests, most notably Faust (Emperor, Blood Tsunami) drumming on 4 & 8. They let their crusty kvlt punx ooze through, exhibited well in “Sin Goddammit” (though it begins kinda goofy, with acoustic guitars and absurd falsetto). Then “Lustmord” just misses the mark, with a person describing serial killer behavior over noisy sludge and various sound effects, including the camera from the beginning of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre; it’s ponderous, and we’ve been down this road before.

This is for fun, above all else. Both men have forthcoming projects independent of one another, and hopefully the output won’t be like the demo-quality contained here.
