GWARBloody Pit of Horror
Release Date: 2010Nov09 (US)
Label: Metal Blade
Rating: 4/5

GWAR are one of the most brilliant bands in the metal world. They have managed to create the perfect shock rock act while simultaneously writing enticing, consistent music. While they don’t actually do anything super unique on their albums, their sound is instantly recognizable. Bloody Pit of Horror sounds slightly different from the GWAR you may be used to hearing, but it’s still the same band. It still rocks.

One of the things that makes Bloody Pit of Horror musically unique is the heavy usage of eight-string guitars. While “Release the Flies” from Lust in Space used them as well, it was the first ever GWAR song to do so. This one aspect makes the album significantly heavier than previous releases. Right from the first track, we hear chords far deeper than GWAR have ever made before. Furthermore, the band explores territories not yet treaded. “Come the Carnivor”, while only a short 2 1/2 minute-long interlude, utilizes a slow, doomy style more akin to Candlemass than the traditional punky thrash you might be used to.

As you might expect, there’s little lacking lyrically. It’s a GWAR album—offensive, revolting, and hilarious. Personally, my favorite is the penultimate track “Litany of the Slain”,  which chronologically lists every “creature” (as they are referred) slain by GWAR in their 25 years as a band. However, the utterly disgusting “Tick Tits”, which describes a woman’s breasts covered in ticks, certainly deserves an honorable mention. As only they could do, “your mother is a whore” is thrown into the song without any prior context. I don’t know another band that can get away with insulting every single listener’s mom.

GWAR are not necessarily breaking any new barriers in the metal world; they are still consistently good and never fail to make me laugh. However, if you want the real experience, an album isn’t the place to go. They are, and always will be, a live experience. That doesn’t mean their albums can’t impress, though.
