Ihsahn – After
released January 26, 2009 on Candlelight Records
Ihsahn concludes his triptych of solo work in grand fashion on After, the last in his successively-improving trilogy. The album was recorded at the artist’s own Symphonique Studio, with the rhythm section from Spiral Architect – drummer Asgeir Mickelson & bassist Lars K. Norberg – and featuring for the first time, Shining saxophonist Jorgen Munkeby. After also exhibits Ihsahn’s first 8-string compositions, a powerfully executed tidal shift. It was reportedly recorded with the intention of Jens Bogren on mixing and mastering duty, and his talents are truly tested with so much to sonically structure.
There may be none better at vocally expressing agony than Ihsahn, deservedly on par with the likes of Mikael Åkerfeldt (Opeth) or Christian Alvestam (Miseration, Scar Symmetry). While Ihsahn could egotistically push himself to the forefront, he always chooses balance with all instruments involved – encouraging the ebb, pushing back when needed, and shedding light on the subtle. Even the often-overlooked bass nicely accents the title track, and concludes “Austere” with a tasteful solo.
However, the secret weapon in this tour de force is Jorgen Munkeby’s daring saxophone. Rarely in the metal world has an instrument been so boldly utilized, and it’s not even unleashed until “A Grave Inversed”, easily the best and most transgressive track here. But listen how integral its role is on the album closer, “On The Shores”. Methodically paced and intoxicatingly sultry, it is the second of two 10-minute epics. The first, “Undercurrent”, also employs an infectious recurring sax riff, and jazzy bass licks that I’m used to hearing from Cynic. There are moments where the music’s avant-garde nature seems to get ahead of itself, but the anchoring hooks are never far away.
It’s only natural to expect something this majestic from one of Emperor‘s pillars, but the fact that Ihsahn consistently delivers music of this caliber solidifies his deserved reputation as a leader in not just black metal, but the music world at large.
The first pick for Best of 2010!
