Karnivool- “Set Fire To The Hive” EP
released September 15th, 2009 on Sony Music

Karnivool is an Australian band that has been compared to bands such as Tool and Incubus and they have a complex sound that is hard to pinpoint but fits strongly within progressive metal. This EP contains 4 tracks off of their “Sound Awake” album which is tentatively scheduled for a February 2010 release. The title track, “Set Fire To The Hive” starts off with loud drums, mild distortion and chunky guitars. Drums pick up in the middle and take on a Tool feel to them. “Roquefort” changes up the motion and seems to place more emphasis on bass with empire horns to add a bit of uniqueness to the sound. Well-structured but has a more mainstream feel to it. “Deadman” is a live song with a mild bluesy feel to it and more of the same as other tracks. Overall, the songs show promise but they have a strong mainstream industrial feel to them.

Rating: 4/5 … Upon first listen, my imagination conjured colonial Massachusetts and myself as a member of the infamous Salem witch hunt.
