Lightning Swords of Death – The Extra Dimensional Wound
Release Date: 2010May25 (US)
Label: Metal Blade
Rating: 3/5
The Extra Dimensional Wound is a completely no-frills unrelenting black thrash album. With the guitars tuned down several steps, guttural vocals, and crusty primal riffs, Lightning Swords of Death doesn’t hold anything back—except interesting songwriting. If you want to listen to something harsh, powerful, well-produced, with only a minor tinge of that traditional black metal dissonance, or even if you want some good background music, pull out this record. Though if you want to be inspired or are in the mood for something different, look elsewhere.
At this part of the review, I usually like to discuss the key songs. But to tell the truth, I can’t really tell most of them apart, with “Zwartgallig” being the exception—–an atmospheric instrumental. “Damnation Pentastrike” has some semi-catchy parts (as well as an awesome song title) and “Venter of the Black Beast” has some really good doom metal potential. But other than those two-and-a-half songs, there isn’t anything special about the album. At first listen, The Extra Dimensional Wound is a great thrash/black metal album, but it has no memorable value. I normally don’t say this about black metal, but it needs some solos or something to mix it up.
