Pelican – “Ephemeral”
released June 2, 2009 on Southern Lord
The Chicago instru-metal quartet debuts on Southern Lord with a three-track EP of new material. It’s been two years since 2007’s divisive full length, City Of Echoes, but this is their fourth offering since then, and it’s a solid twenty minute journey. The 5-7 min track length seems to work for them, as their longer songs can drag and their shorter compositions need to build more steam. The tone and delivery are instantly recognizable as Pelican’s–stylistically similar to bands like Isis or Mouth of The Architect, only much more riff-focused and (of course) sans vocals. Besides the two new tracks, they also re-record the Sabbath-worshipping Earth song “Geometry of Murder” with that band’s guitarist, Dylan Carlson. Released almost exclusively on vinyl, this is clearly diehard-focused, while the rest of us patiently await the forthcoming album.

This is another decent album for lovers of doom and grunge as well. It doesn’t tread new ground but rather sticks to a trusted method.
