Seventh Void – “Heaven Is Gone”
released April 20, 2009 on Big Vin Records
After 6 years of conceptualizing and solidification, Kenny Hickey (guitar) and John Kelley (drums) of Type O Negative debut their doom rock side project on Vinnie Paul’s indie label. The music rolls at a steady pace that sometimes slows to a sludgy lurch (check 3), in many respects akin to Black Sabbath. Hickey also handles vocal duties. Sounding similar to Sebastian Bach, they’re pretty strong in and of themselves, but it’s the lyrics and their delivery that are often too repetitive, and drag the album down. Also, some songs seem to end prematurely, like “Descent” (which, incidentally, never seems to get off the ground). There’s definitely promise here, but future albums will need more attention to detail.
