The Red Chord – Fed Through The Teeth Machine
released October 27, 2009 on Metal Blade
It is not easy, by any means, to construct competent metalcore. Hell, the very term conjures up nothing less than cringes in most metalheads. However, the recent resurgence of quality output from returning originators like Coalesce and Burnt By The Sun may help the world remember where bands like The Red Chord draw much of their influence.
The Massachusetts men have pared down to a quartet on their fourth LP, leaving axeman Mike ‘Gunface’ McKenzie shredding solo (though the album was recorded at former guitarist’s Jonny Fay Backyard Studios). Gregory Weeks’ bass melodies step up as well (strongly evidenced in “Floating Through The Vein” and “Ingest The Ash”), complimenting the evolving riffage. Guy Kozowyk’s clever-cum-rabid vocals still roar with relentless intensity, displaying a primal force that the youngins can only hope to duplicate. Of course, this would all be rendered ineffective without Brad Fickeisen knowing precisely when to drop blastbeats and when to pull back.
With nearly a decade under their belts, they aren’t exactly ancient, but in a scene that moves this quickly, you’ve gotta stake a strong claim. And they’ve done just that…at least for one more year! PS, is that Unicron on the cover?
