Review : SVARTSOT – “Mulmets Viser”

Rating: 2/5

Altogether, “Mulmets Viser” is impressive considering the circumstances. I can see a lot of rising potential with this group in albums to come. Cheers!

Review : SKYFORGER – “Kurbads”

Rating: 3/5

The combination of the folky flutes/bagpipes with the Motörhead-style vocals and thrash metal riffs is quite enjoyable. And of course, like any true folk band, their tunes are worthy of jigs and pint- swigging, which makes it all the more fun to listen to.

Review : NÀTTSÒL – “Stemning”

Rating: 4/5

“Stemning” is not your typical Black Metal album. It’s not even typical for melodic Black Metal. Despite some weak points, this is a very promising debut for Nàttsòl.

Review : PAIN – “Cynic Paradise”

Rating: 2.5/5

Side projects in the Metal world usually form to either flesh out––or experiment with––enigmatic aspects of one’s personality. Pain is the result of Peter Tägtgren’s love for industrial metal, reportedly inspired by Fear Factory’s “Soul of a New Machine”. Frankly, his attention is better devoted to the celebrated death metal of Hypocrisy.

Review: I SHALT BECOME – “Poison”

Rating: 3/5

I Shalt Become is impressive, for a one-man project. “Poison” should be considered Black Metal, but only in the mysterious sense. It’s not heavy or fast, but it also doesn’t have the softness to really be post-black

Review: HACAVITZ – “Metztli Obscura”

Rating : 2/5

One thing I require to really respect a Black Metal band is their ability to embrace their heritage or the history of the land on which they live, no matter what part of the world they’re from. Hacavitz does this by writing songs about what I assume is Aztec mythology or anthropology. This is sure to keep “Metzli Obscura” shrouded in mystery, the way Black Metal should be.

Review : AEON – “Path of Fire”

Rating: 3/5

Listening to blasphemous death metal is an awful lot like having sex with an 18-year old guy: fast, unrelenting, and the wad is blown before ten minutes are up. You cannot really fault the performance, but after a once-around you know what to expect, and have little reason to revisit besides simplistic satisfaction.

Review : LEVI/WERSTLER – “Avalanche of Worms”

Rating: 4/5

Levi and Werstler needed Avalanche of Worms. Most good musicians draw inspiration from a variety of backgrounds. Metal artists sometimes miss their opportunity to record music outside of their known sphere, but thankfully, these guys answered the knock.

Review : CULTED – “Of Death and Ritual”

I never knew that I would be interested in the sonic equivalent of hanging out alone in a dank basement, getting stoned, while burning pasta on the stove.

Review : IMAGIKA – “Portrait of a Hanged Man”

Rating: 4/5

I don’t not recall Imagika’s 2008 effort “Feast for the Hated”; it must have just been a rough reviewing day, and fell by the wayside without much of a chance. Scouring the interwebs, they seem minimally covered by everyone from Allmusic to Encyclopaedia Metallum, so I am not the only one overlooking these seventeen-year vets of the Bay Area thrash circle. This, their seventh album, has reopened my ears.
