Interview : Chrigel Glanzmann, ELUVEITIE

Christian “Chrigel” Glanzmann is the leader of Eluveitie, one of the most unique and interesting bands to play what many are calling “folk metal”, due to their inclusion of traditional melodies in metallic arrangements. However, as you will read, Chrigel does not necessarily identify with these bands, nor does Eluveitie conform to other commonalities in The Metalverse, such as guitar solos. After years of inundation, the true luminaries are starting to shine through, and I am proud to have spoken with one of these stars.

As a unit, they radiate an aura of authenticity, if for no other reason than their steadfast adherence to traditional folk instruments (albeit amidst Gothenburg thrash). Nothing is synthesized, from the violin and hurdy-gurdy to a wide variety of flutes, pipes, and whistles; the band crafts songs with both depth and dynamism. Where so many similar bands feel forced, Eluveitie channels a naturally flowing energy into their powerful music.

Eluveitie – Evocation I: The Arcane Dominion released April 17, 2009 on Nuclear Blast Expecting their usual dark and moving folk/death metal sound, I was shocked to hear how much celtic folk influence was in this album, and that it was almost completely acoustic. Definitely not a bad thing for a change. It has a very mystical and melancholic tone to it, and it’s atmospheric! The kind of music you get lost in, but enjoy it that much more.
