Deadfall is the brainchild of Berkelee smartypants Eddie Kim, who wrote, produced, recorded, performed guitar, programmed drums, engineered, mastered, and — I dunno — catered? Man, good of him to get bassist Sean Dusoe in there for balance. Control much? I know the feeling….

“Hardcore Will Never Die, But You Will” is a record that shows Mogwai are eager to explore new territory. It’s not perfect, and some of these songs feels like B-side throwaways to me, but as always, it’s a thrill to follow them into the unknown.

I drooled at the mindboggling concept of a Mogwai concert album and film. This is one of the few bands that has made me physically lose my breath; it was during an apocalyptic rendition of their classic track “Mogwai Fear Satan” in the darkened club So What! in Oslo in the late nineties. So expectations were running quite high—to say the least—when I opened the package from the record store. Would my expectations for this album be fulfilled? Oh, yes.

John 5 - “Requiem” [60 Cycle Hum] … fourth solo album from this popular hired gun … he’s painted up like one of Marilyn Manson’s minions, but this guy has done and can do more … his many influences can be heard throughout, from Joe Satriani worship (1) to Rob Zombie horror shlock (2+3, 6) and even some banjo (4, 7), which may be some Skynyrd residue … cerrtainly worth exploring, cuz the dude can shred, and write good grooves with just enough humor to be engaging … but ultimately it is a guitarist’s album and the unaccustomed may find themselves lost in the instrumental [...read more]
