Review : CATHEDRAL - "Anniversary"

Review : CATHEDRAL – “Anniversary”

Rating: 5/5

This is easily one of my top picks for 2011. I’ve been waiting for a great live album all year and this fucking delivers! The curtain may be coming to a close for Cathedral in 2012, but this is a fitting eulogy.

Review : THE GATES OF SLUMBER – “The Wretch”

Rating: 5/5

“The Wretch” is an album that people will be talking about for the next 20 years and should surely inspire the young hellions of today to carry the mantle.

Review : FULL BLOWN CHAOS – “Full Blown Chaos”

Rating: 3/5

Full Blown Chaos sticks to what they know with this release. Unfortunately, they’re 10 years too late. Clean up the sound, vocals and please, for the love of Alex Jones, write about something relevant for a change.

Review : SKYFORGER – “Kurbads”

Rating: 3/5

The combination of the folky flutes/bagpipes with the Motörhead-style vocals and thrash metal riffs is quite enjoyable. And of course, like any true folk band, their tunes are worthy of jigs and pint- swigging, which makes it all the more fun to listen to.

Review : AEON - "Path of Fire"

Review : AEON – “Path of Fire”

Rating: 3/5

Listening to blasphemous death metal is an awful lot like having sex with an 18-year old guy: fast, unrelenting, and the wad is blown before ten minutes are up. You cannot really fault the performance, but after a once-around you know what to expect, and have little reason to revisit besides simplistic satisfaction.

Review : BRAIN DRILL – “Quantum Catastrophe”

Rating: 4/5

Technical death metal is one of the most polarizing genres among metalheads. Some will argue for hours that Necrophagist are some of the most talented musicians ever to walk the earth while others will say that Decrepit Birth noodle on forever without any kind of musical direction. Both of these arguments have credence. However, I haven’t seen a single band give critics so many dichotomous opinions of the same thing as much as Brain Drill have.

Review : BISON B.C. - "Dark Ages"

Review : BISON B.C. – “Dark Ages”

Rating : 4.5/5

Bison B.C. aren’t really doing anything totally original or their own, but they manage to execute the sound of their forefathers quite well. Brent Hinds (Mastodon) and Matt Pike (Sleep, High on Fire) would certainly dig this album, as would Scott Kelly (Neurosis), whose signature howls are channeled occasionally by vocalist Dan And. Those are some big names, but luckily Bison manages to make the whole ring much stronger than simply the sum of its parts.

Review : RAVEN - "Walk Through Fire"

Review : RAVEN – “Walk Through Fire”

Rating: 3.5/5

“Walk Through Fire” manages a solid, impassioned statement to the Metal world. These guys have fought long and hard just to get where they are now; Raven deserves your attention, and whatever shiny objects you may have handy.
